Guide to a Successful Interview

Tips, tricks and best practices to ace your next interview and secure your dream role.

Introduction

Some people may find interviews easy, others might feel nervous or unsure – but either way, they are a necessary part of the hiring process. Interviews cannot be avoided, so it’s important to approach them with preparation and a positive mindset. By equipping yourself with the right tools and strategies, you can increase your chances of success. Below are some helpful tips and tricks to ensure you feel confident and ready to ace your interview.

Step 1: Preparing for the Interview

(should be done at least 24 hours before the interview)

Research the company: Learn about their products and services, history, mission, values and culture.

Know the team: Look up key team members on LinkedIn or the company website.

Prepare questions: Come with meaningful questions about the role and the company.

Understand the role: Review the job description from Talent Sam and understand what is expected of you.

Practice: Rehearse common interview questions and answers. (see below)

Test your tech: Ensure your audio, video, and internet connection are working smoothly.

Step 2: Before the Interview

(should be done in the hour before the interview)

Dress well: Dress appropriately and semi-formal, just as you would for an in-person interview. Do not attend wearing sleeveless clothing or sleep-ware.

Location: Ensure you are in a quiet, distraction-free, and well-lit environment.

Technology: Use a computer for a stable connection, with clear audio and video quality.

Be prepared: Sit at a desk, ready with any notes, or questions.

Log in early: Join the call 5-10 minutes early to show punctuality and ensure your connection is working.

Step 3: In the Interview

Turn your video on: This is extremely important. Employers want to see you and your smile.

Be yourself: Show your personality while maintaining professionalism.

Listen actively: Pay close attention to the interviewer, and avoid interrupting.

Engage thoughtfully: Ask meaningful questions and provide clear, concise answers.

Stay positive: Keep a friendly and approachable attitude throughout.

Confidence, not arrogance: Speak confidently but remain humble and open-minded.

Body language matters: Maintain good posture, make eye contact, and avoid distractions.

Breathing exercises: Try deep breathing or positive visualisation to stay calm.

After the Interview

Complete any follow-ups: Ensure any requested documents (e.g., references, assessments, portfolios) are submitted promptly.
